Frequently Asked Questions
We appreciate that the costs encountered when learning to ride a motorbike is expensive. However you must wear appropriate clothing to ensure you are properly protected.
Please note that if you attend any training and are not appropriately dressed you will NOT be able to continue.
You will need:
- Gloves – Motorcycle gloves are designed to be hard wearing and protect vulnerable parts of your hands.
- Jacket – Should be worn at all times when riding. A motorcycle jacket will offer the best protection.
- Trousers – denim jeans are acceptable and should be thick material with no tears. Tight fitting/torn jeans are going to offer little or no protection.
- Footwear – you must have ankle protection, we recommend motorcycle boots or another sturdy type of boot.
The following are guidelines for clothing that is NOT acceptable:
- Training shoes, canvas basketball trainers/boat shoes.
- Any form of clothing with areas of exposed skin i.e. skirts or shorts.
- Tight fitting jeans/leggings/jeggings etc.
- A shell suit or lightweight tracksuit.
- Ripped jeans/trousers.
- Lightweight fleece or hoody.
- No gloves or ski gloves.
There’s much more to buying a helmet than choosing the colour or style that you like! Firstly the helmet must meet UNECE Regulation 22.05 standards. We strongly recommend that you never purchase a second hand helmet or order from a website. You must try on a few helmets from different manufacturers to find what fits you best.
The UK Government launched the SHARP Helmet Safety Scheme website where you can see the safety ratings for helmets as well as great advice.
It is a good idea to take the motorcycle theory test before your CBT but at the moment it is not compulsory. Later in the year the law will be changing so that the theory test will have to be passed with DVS before you can take your CBT course.

If you are planning to take your driving test in the near future or if you have not ridden for a few years, then perhaps a refresher course with one of our instructors is the way forward.
Private lessons are sessions suited to your needs and is charged by the hour. You can combine private lessons with other training programmes. For example if you have not ridden for a few years and have just applied for a new, provisional licence, then a 1 hour refresher course (off road) may be all you need.
Alternatively, if you are about to take your motorbike test then a 1 or 2 hour private refresher course might help you to iron out any problems and revise good practice biking skills you need to pass safely.
The course is designed for novice riders or those who have never ridden a motorcycle or scooter before and is done over two sessions.
After a brief discussion about the legal requirements before you can ride a bike and the various types of clothing a rider should consider wearing, the trainee is then introduced to the machine and its controls.
When the trainee has mastered moving off safely, he or she will then go though a variety of drills which provide the basis for understanding the System of Motorcycle Control.
The second session starts with a further discussion about recognising the risks involved and how to limit them and also the Highway Code. This is followed by a Road Ride, which lasts a minimum of 90 minutes, during which time the trainee will get experience of as many different road formats and junctions as is practicable. The instructor will be in radio contact giving advice and assessing the trainee’s abilities.
Currently Jersey CBT certificates last indefinitely. You should keep this safe as DVS only keep records for a few years and if you have lost your CBT certificate DVS may no longer have a record. If you then wish to ride a larger capacity machine you may have to retake your CBT.
Currently its valid indefinitely, however, DVS only keep records for a few years so if you lose your certificate and wish to upgrade your licence to a larger category you may have to retake your CBT. The Courts of Jersey can order disqualified riders to retake their CBT.
All learner riders with a licence since 1st September 1997, who wish to ride a moped or light motorcycle must complete the Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT). Also, if you have been disqualified from riding a heavy motorcycle, you must take a CBT course if you want to renew your licence.
